Thyroid eye disease, also known as Graves’ ophthalmopathy, is a condition associated with an overactive thyroid gland and can cause eye-related symptoms such as bulging eyes, double vision, dryness, redness and swelling. Endoscopic orbital decompression is a surgical procedure used to treat this condition.

During endoscopic orbital decompression, a small camera called an endoscope is inserted into the nasal cavity. The surgeon then creates tiny incisions and removes or reshapes the bones around the eye socket to create more space for the swollen tissues and relieve pressure on the optic nerve. By doing so, the procedure aims to improve eye appearance, reduce bulgi and alleviate symptoms such as double vision.

Endoscopic orbital decompression is considered a minimally invasive approach. It offers several benefits, including smaller incisions, reduced scarring, shorter recovery time and potentially less post-operative discomfort.

Thyroid eye disease is a complex condition, and treatment may involve a multidisciplinary approach with input from an endocrinologist, oculoplastic surgeon and rhinologist. Your healthcare team will work together to provide comprehensive care and help improve your eye symptoms and overall well-being.

Our expert team including Dr. Landon Massoth (rhinologist) and Dr. Shannon Cox (oculoplastic surgery – The Eye Institute) specialize in thyroid eye disease and endoscopic orbital decompression. They will evaluate your condition, assess the severity of your symptoms and determine if endoscopic orbital decompression is the appropriate treatment for you.
